Diabetes affects so many things outside of the obvious "blood sugar" and "my butter compartment is now filled with insulin instead of butter" department.  Oftentimes, our community cites diabetes as a reason for choosing, or not choosing, certain employment opportunities because of health insurance needs, schedules, etc.

In polling our CWD family, we found that insurance coverage concerns are dominant, seconded by the need for a flexible schedule to accommodate diabetes needs. There were also many votes for having chosen a different career because of diabetes-related concerns.

On the plus side, diabetes has inspired many of our community members to give back and seek employment involved in diabetes research, advocacy, or industry.  PWD being involved in design and development of treatment and programs is an excellent way of moving the mission of "care today for a cure tomorrow" forward.  And it also says a lot about how our community makes efforts to craft up lemonade out of lemons.
