We are having trouble with the dawn phenomenon. We have been giving a little Humalog at 3 am, if the blood sugar is over 150 mg/dl [8.3 mmol/L], to help from climbing. Is there anything else we can do to prevent blood sugars from climbing so much?

I am 12 and have had Type 1 for almost two years. My last two dental checkups have shown 3 cavities, which the dentist is concerned about. He thinks they’re caused by the phosphoric acid in diet soda. Is there something else I can drink?

My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes several weeks ago. He turned 7 two weeks later. We have a wonderful pediatrician but he has perhaps only 2 other children in his medical group, not his patients, with diabetes. Would my son “be better off” with a pediatric endocrinologist?

My two year old daughter was just started on 0.5 unit of Humalog at her breakfast meal. She is pre-clinical without antibodies. Her HbA1c has never been over 5.7%. She has had many highs, but they aren’t consistent. I am still uneasy about starting her on the insulin. Do you think she should just get the shot when she is high or get the shot every day?

Almost once a week, my three year old daughter will have a really “weird” blood glucose level. She may be 79 mg/dl [4.4 mmol/L] in the morning, eat a good breakfast, be in the 400s mg/dl [22.2 mmol/L] two hours later, and then by lunch she is back down to the 100s mg/dl [5.6 mmol/L]. I can’t seem to find a pattern within time of day, specific food or activity level. Any ideas?
