A team approach is the best approach, according to our CWD poll, with 75% of our poll participants seeing a certified diabetes educator (CDE) as part of their care team.

According to the National Certification Board Diabetes Educators, "a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a health professional who possesses comprehensive knowledge of and experience in diabetes prevention, pre-diabetes, and diabetes management." But at the most recent AADE annual meeting, the term "CDE" was replaced by "diabetes education and care specialist," aka DECS.

This video, which features current president of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, Karen Kemmis, and Kellie Antinori-Lent, AADE president-elect, explains the name change.

No matter what you call these specialists, diabetes educators are critical members of your diabetes care team, helping you integrate diabetes into the life you want to live.  Find an education program in your area, and visit this page if you're interested in becoming an educator.
