• Friends, our on-line database of parents, children, teens, adults, relatives and friends, continues to grow. If you'd like a pen pal or an e-mail friend, stop by and browse through the list. Add your own name while you're there.

• Jacob, diagnosed with juvenile diabetes on his 23rd day of life, joins the Children's Voices pages.

• The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Web site is under construction. Check in periodically to see how it's coming.

• Diabetic retinopathy is one of the more feared complications of diabetes. Visit the Retina Institure of Maryland and see photographs of
  • a normal retina
  • a retina with diabetic retinopathy, and
  • a retina with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

• People with diabetes face discrimination in the workplace. Read Employment Considerations for People Who Have Diabetes for information about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how it applies to diabetes.

• Ever wonder how many people have diabetes? Be sure to read the diabetes statistics at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease of the National Institutes of Health.

• Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biomedical company that is developing several new drugs to help those with insulin-dependent diabetes. Learn more from reading their press releases.

• Added to the list of Pharmacies with an On-Line Presence is Self Care, Inc. Diabetic Supplies, which sells LifeScan and Medisense products on-line and includes a list of northern California diabetes support groups.

• Diabetic Exchanges is a question and answer page written by Joanne Larsen, M.S., R.D, with good information for diabetics. Listed on the Food Links page.

• Sugar-Free Express is the home of unique, high-quality sugar-free items. Run by the family of Jason, a child with diabetes who was diagnosed in September 1992.

• Springs of Life sells quite a variety of sugar-free chocolates. You can even order on-line.

• Diabetes Mellitus: A Practical Handbook by Sue K. Milchovich, RN, BSN, CDE and Barbara Dunn-Long, RD, is a new book for parents of children with diabetes. More books are listed on the Books for Parents page.

• NutriGenie, a nutrition software publisher, has two products that might be of interest to diabetics:
  1. Managing Diabetes Version 3.6 for Windows, a diet and nutrition pacakge for those with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

  2. Diabetic Nutrition version 3.3 for Windows, a somewhat scaled back version of Managing Diabetes Version 3.6 for Windows.

• ITA Software, Inc., offers software for analyzing blood glucose readings. Their Web site displays several screen snapshots from their four-program commercial software bundle for Windows.

• New links for kids include:
  • Sports Illustrated for Kids has up-to-the-minute sports information for kids.

  • Time for Kids helps kids keep current on world events.

  • The Yuckiest Site on the Internet (all about cockroaches!)

  • Zoo Net
