Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Frederick Family

The Frederick Family, Cheshire, Connecticut

September 16th, 2002
Rufus arrives! He had an exciting day meeting the neighbors-Jennifer (7 years old- diagnosed at 2) and her friend Katie pretended they were taking care of all the stuffed animals who had diabetes (not just Rufus!). All were tired at the end of the day.

Rufus went to school! Jen is in second grade at Highland School in Cheshire, Connecticut. Rufus had a special seat right next to the teacher. Jen made up the mailing box as Rufus' bed and had him sleep on the floor next to her bed.

Rufus has been enjoying going to school every day with Jen and was her topic of Show and Tell on Friday.

Rufus has went to church where we solicited donations for the Walk for a Cure for next weekend. Our church is very generous and the source of the majority of our donations. Rufus looked great on display on the table where we had people sign up. We spoke to a young member (4 years old) of our church who was just diagnosed with diabetes and shared stories.

September 23-25, 2002
Rufus continued to attend school with Jen every day. Enjoying her school.

September 26-27, 2002
Jen was VERY high (over 600)-found a kink in her cannula from the pump (the part in her body). We changed it, but she spent the 26th with her grandparents, sick to her stomach. It's so hard to tell if she is sick because she is high or high because she is sick... the old chick and the egg scenario. She was better on the 27th, but spent the day with grandparents (and Rufus) again to gain her strength back. Jen practiced giving Rufus shots with an old needle (that we donšt use since getting the pump). We also cut out a picture of the old 508 pump from some MiniMed information and used an old site to pretend to insert the pump on Rufus.

September 28, 2002
Very bad day! We had to change Jen's site seven times due to kinks in the cannula. Rufus was very supportive! Once things settled down, we went to a birthday party for Jen's grandma. Rufus had a good time.

September 29, 2002
Our last day with Rufus. We went on the Walk for a Cure for JDRF on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University. We took lots of pictures. Rufus even had his own team shirt for Jennifer's Journey. We'll be getting him ready and comfy in his box to mail to the Giffin family in Vermont. We've spoken to them by phone, and we know Rufus will be well taken care of!
