Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Dillman Family

The Dillman Family, McAlisterville, Pennsylvania

July 18, 2001
Rufus has just arrived! He is just in time for lunch with Cassidy. Shrimp noodles (Maruchan noodles) one of her favorite meals! Cassidy is excited as Ernie (her favorite UPS driver) delivered Rufus to her. She is ready to introduce him to his two female cousins, Rufus and Ruby. Rufus the girl is such a tomboy she insists on being called Rufus instead of Ruby like her sister we don't get confused that way either! They are ready to go to Daddy's (Dennis) softball game tonight. He plays for Beward's Pharmacy. Rufus is excited to meet Dalton, Andi, Kayce, Justin and Jordan, Cassidy's softball buddies. He is doubly excited to find out Daddy's softball team is attending a tournament in Ocean City, Maryland! Only two more days including today! What fun! We can hardly wait!

July 19, 2001
Cassidy and Rufus wake up and get blood sugar checks. Rufus is fine but Cassidy is a little high extra H for her! They each have a Kool-Aid burst and some Blue's Clues crackers. Rufus is feeling better after his long rest overnight. It's a long way from Canada to PA! He got a slight trim in Mom's hair salon yesterday…He was getting a little shaggy. Cassidy's Mimi washed his clothes very carefully and gave him a refreshing Febreeze bath. What refreshment, he's a new bear! Cassidy and Rufus travel to Dr. Cox's office for a HbA1c. Rufus goes first and then Cassidy. They both get stickers and of course Rufus picks a bear sticker. Everyone tells him what a great thing his awareness tour is! He meets one of the family doctors that Cassidy sees Dr. Fuoco and one of her favorite nurses Theresa. They will send Rufus and Cassidy's results to Jane (Cassidy's CDE) and Dr. Langdon (her endo) in Danville in preparation for her visit in the beginning/middle of August. We have an interview for 3:00 today with the Juniata Sentinel our county wide newspaper.

July 20, 2001
Interview went well yesterday. Rufus will make this weeks paper. We're off to the shore for the weekend and Daddy's ball game. It's a long ride with a few low blood sugars but we all make it safe and sound. We grab a bite to eat and head for the beach. Tonight we'll go to the boardwalk and grab our souvenirs. Late night for us and early morning game. Rufus and Cassidy's schedules have adjusted well but they are sure tuckered out!

July 21, 2001
Daddy's 1st game is at 11:00 so we leave our hotel at about 9:30. We have a long drive to Snow Hill and the ball field. We win 2 games but not lucky enough to advance to tomorrow's game. We take Rufus to Higgin's Crab House and teach him how to pick crabs. He loves them! Cassidy has a hot dog and French fries instead. Blood sugars are a little high but we are on 31st street and have a long walk back to our hotel on 48th street! Everything balances out.

July 22, 2001
We wake Rufus and Cassidy up to get shots and breakfast. We're going to caravan home with Uncle Davey and Corey. JY, Sue, Dalton and Andi decide to travel with us. We head to the boardwalk to get some fudge and taffy. Rufus brings us luck and we win a free pound of fudge. Rufus and Cassidy agree it will be a good snack for later as they have already had Dippin Dots with Dalton and Andi. Away we go headed for PA and McAlisterville. Home Sweet Home! Thanks for the Memories, Ocean City Maryland!

July 23, 2001
Up a little late today. Things were so hectic we'll have to all grab a nap today. We're finally all unpacked and ready to rest up from vacation. Got our picture taken with Daddy's ball team and my softball buddies. We all had a great time at the game tonight!

July 24, 2001
Up and at em'! Blood sugar checks were high this morning extra H for us! We rode to Mifflintown (about 15 minutes away from McAlisterville) with Mom and Mimi. Stopped at McDonald's for a chicken nugget Happy Meal. Just the right amount of carbs and a regular Sprite for our recent low readings. Cassidy and Rufus make the front page of the county wide paper. YAAY! We had our second interview today. Cassidy and Rufus drug the photographer around the house and yard playing! Not too much planned as it is ho here (about 90-100 degrees). We are going to Nanny and Pappy's for chicken potpie. Uncle Davey will be there along with Uncle Charles and Aunt Janie. What fun we'll have. One cup of Nanny's pot pie is about 30-45 carbs just right for our supper count!

July 25, 2001
It is soon time for Rufus to move on. We'll miss him. But what a surprise! Rufus and Cassidy make the front page again! They are quite the celebrities. The Lewistown Sentinel reaches an even bigger area. More awareness raised! We're getting pictures back today hopefully. Rufus is sad to go but eager to meet the Piccotti's in Easton. He's eager to see more of the great state of Pennsylvania. I'm sure Cassidy will hold Rufus extra tight today as he is leaving very soon!

July 26, 2001
Good blood sugars again today! YAY! We finally get in touch with the Piccottis. HOORAY! Cassidy is excited to learn the boy's name is Paul. One of her favorite cousin's name is Paul. We tell Rufus and he can't wait to meet him!

July 30, 2001
Rufus is finally on his way after waiting for lost pictures. Bon Voyage little buddy bear! Many happy returns, keep spreading the news and help the world learn more about this terrible disease. We'll miss you very much!

Jodi, Dennis and Cassidy Dillman 4 yrs. old dx. 4/00
