Back to Rufus Ruby Visits the Hebert Family

The Hebert Family, Essexville, Michigan

Ruby is finally here! Christina was so excited to get her. She took her to school and slept with her. When she went to school, the kindergarten kids loved her. One of the other moms was telling me that her son came home and told her about Ruby. He was pretty impressed.

Today was a big day for Christina and Ruby. Christina went to get her ears pierced. She was such a big girl, but she did hold on to Ruby the whole time. After that, Christina went to her grandparents' houses to show off her new ears and introduce Ruby to everyone. Christina made sure she introduced Ruby to everyone and they shook hands (paws) with her.

Ruby went with Christina's brother, Anthony, to his soccer game today. The whole team got to meet her. It was his treat day, so he put Ruby right on top of the cooler to watch them play. They won, thanks to Ruby!

Today was a big day for Ruby and Christina. Christina took Ruby to church today. Her brother and cousin made their First Communion. The mass was two hours long, but they Christina and Ruby were excellent. After that, the boys had a combined party. Christina introduced Ruby to the rest of the family. They were tired out after the long day.

Today Ruby visited the second grade class with Christina's brother, Anthony. It was a nice visit for all!

Christina started t-ball today. Ruby went with us to the game. I got to hold her the whole time. It was a little tricky because her game started at 5:30 and she needed to get a shot and eat dinner. So, I tested her blood sugar while the coaches were talking and had her eat while she was waiting for her turn. This is going to be a new challenge for our family, trying to have her in sports while needing to test, get a shot, and eat.

Well, it is time for Ruby to move on. She and Christina have had a great visit and have been inseparable. Everyone was so interested in hearing about how Ruby came to be and learn more about Christina's diabetes. They have tested their sugar together, gone to school together, and slept together. Ruby has become a big part of our lives in just one week, but we know it's time for her to move on. Lots of other families are waiting to spend time with her, too.

She did come into contact with a lot of people, so mom washed her clothes before she made the trip. She now will travel to Payton in E. Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Safe travels to you, Ruby!

Christina Hebert, 6 - diagnosed 1/29/01, brothers: Anthony, 8 and Nathan, 11, Chris, dad, and Lynn, mom
