Maple Grove Farms of Vermont
Sponsors Family to Attend
Children with Diabetes' Friends for Life Conference
Maple Grove Farms of Vermont ran an essay contest with the grand prize being a Family Scholarship to attend the 2008 Children with Diabetes "Friends for Life" (FFL) conference held July 23-27th at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at Seaworld. Max Voss from Wisconsin was the contest winner. Max, his sister Sophie and his dad, Dave all have type 1 diabetes.
The Voss family was welcomed into the CWD family, along with 900 other first-timers. Three thousand people from nearly every state in the U.S. and fifteen countries traveled to Orlando for the ninth annual conference.
While at FFL, the Voss family attended many focus group presentations and discussions, which deal with the many aspects in managing diabetes. Max and Sophie took part in many of the children's group activities, which are set up by age group and included karaoke, dancing, scavenger hunts and a trip to Universal Studios.
Many VIP's, who also have diabetes, were on hand to meet and inspire the kids and families, including USA Triathelete Jay Hewitt, Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson, Mr. USA Doug Burns, NBA star Chris Dudley, Prima Ballerina Zippora Karz, to name a few.
Max talked with NBA star Chris Dudley, Mr. USA Doug Burns and other celebrities about living with and managing diabetes. Sophie met Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson and was happy to see she wears the same pink pump. According to their mom, Jennifer, "it was amazing to see children from all over the world who are going through the same daily battle against diabetes. For once, the kids felt they fit in. Children were all testing their sugars, counting carbs and bolusing on the pump. The food buffets and snacks all had carb counts too." She added, "we could never thank Maple Grove Farms enough for allowing us to experience such a life changing event!"
