For people with type 1 diabetes, running out of insulin before you can renew your prescription is potentially deadly. In the past several years, we've heard news reports of people dying due to running out of insulin. Given the importance of this issue, we asked our readers what they would do if faced with running out of insulin.
The good news is that 45% of our respondents said that they never run out of insulin. The bad news is that 55% do, and their responses vary, as you can see from the data to the left. While calling your doctor might seem to be the first course of action, that's not the only answer. Almost one in ten rely on friends to help out. Very few revert to low-cost Regular and NPH insulin, perhaps because people diagnosed after the advent of insulin analogs are unlikely to have any experience or training on using those insulins.
The three major insulin providers in the US offer assistance programs to help people who are struggling to pay for their insulin:
- Eli Lilly & Company
- Novo Nordisk
