When do you or your child test for ketones?

Testing for ketones when you're ill or have very high blood sugar is an essential part of good diabetes management. The presence of ketones can indicate insufficient insulin, for example, which can lead to ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Early detection of ketones, coupled with treatment using extra fast-acting insulin (NovoLog, Humalog or Regular), can help prevent ketoacidosis.

While urine ketone testing has been the traditional method of testing for ketones, the Precision Xtra meter from Abbott MediSense can test for the presence of ketones in the blood, just like testing for blood glucose. Ketones show up in the blood before they show up in urine, so blood ketone testing can provide an earlier indication of problems than can urine ketone testing. Regardless of which blood glucose meter you use, you may want to consider getting a Precision Xtra just for blood ketone testing.
