Poll dates: September 16 - 23, 2001
Total Votes: 779

Meal planning is an important part of diabetes management. Matching food to insulin or oral medications is critical to prevent hypo- and hyperglycemia. Carbohydrate counting offers the greatest flexibility, but requires more effort than exchanges or other types of meal planning.

The table below compares the results of this poll from 1998 and 2000. The trend clearly shows that more and more people with diabetes are using carbohydrate counting for meal planning.

Type of Meal Planning Sep 2001 Sep 2000 Nov 1998
No meal planning 5% 7% 52%
No concentrated sweets 2% 2% 1%
Exchange plan 3% 6% 4%
Carbohydrate counting 84% 79% 39%
Other 4% 3% 1%
