Back to Kid' Voices Jessica

Hi, my name is Jessica. I'm 11 years old and I live in Florida. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on January 23, 2010. My parents were noticing that I was getting really skinny and drinking lots of water. I also was going to the bathroom constantly. My Mom finally weighed me and I had lost 15 pounds! I was 73 pounds! She finally took me to my normal pediatrician and they did a urine test. I had a bunch of ketones in blood so my doctor told me to go to the E.R immediately.

I was so upset at first but on the way to All Children's Hospital my Mom explained to me everything she knew about diabetes. All the nurses were SO nice and my Dad would even sneak Graham crackers and peanut butter for me throughout the night. I stayed in the hospital for about 3 days and when I came home all the neighbors were SO supportive!

It was kind of hard telling my friends, but when I came back to school my teacher and classmates were so caring and I remember my best friend looking at me at 10:30 making sure I was having my snack! For my insulin I take Humalog before meals and Lantus Solostar at bedtime always. I really want an OmniPod pump because it would be so much easier than giving myself injections.

The highest I've been is a 405 and the lowest is a 42. I'm getting used to knowing when I'm low or high. You can email my parents at . I really want a friend who has diabetes and has the same feelings I have.
