Back to Kid' Voices Renee

My name's Renee. I'm 17 and have had diabetes since I was 4. I was diagnosed on Christmas eve and spent three to four days in my local hospital and was then sent to a nearby children's hospital where I met my educator, dietician, endocrinologist and nurse practitioner. These are the people that decided that I was to have two shots! Try and explain to a 4 year old that something that hurts them is the best thing for them!

After being on two shots, I was put onto three shots when I started school at the age of five. After all these needles, who thought that they could add more? But because I got heavily involved in sports, I was put on 4-5 shots, depending on what I was doing in the day. I've been admitted to hospital many times because of DKA. My parents and I decided that maybe a pump would help! Well, about two months after this decision I was set up with a Cozmo 1700, and now the Cozmo's are not being manufactured anymore! I was told I now have to get a new one after only being on the Cozmo for 4 years. I'm now thinking of going on the Animas :)

Since being on the pump my HbA1C is now 6.7 and I'm glad we made the switch from injections because this has given me a lot more freedom and has taught me life values such as responsibility.

I love netball and have played it for 12 years and I'm a passionate soccer player but have decided to not play this year because of my school commitments. I'm in year 12 and have my HSC. I'm hoping to get into University of Western Sydney UWS for nursing and maybe even a sporting scholarship.

Other then my diabetes I am a regular 17 year old who is passoniate about "living a life without my D." I'm outgoing and am not shy about my diabetes -- whoever asks will always get an answer. I'm at times a bit too hyperactive and look forward to the simple things in life.

I would like to help anyone who has just been diagnosed or is going through a rough time with their diabetes, because at times it is rough!
