Back to Kid' Voices Bryson

Hi everyone my name is Bryson and I am three years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in February of 2007. My mommy noticed that I became really thirsty all of the time and went to the bathroom a lot. I started off taking 4 insulin shots per day, but my blood sugar levels were still getting really high so my doctor at Duke gave me an insulin pump in May. I really like my pump, it is blue and it looks like a pager. My mom had a pouch made especially for my pump and it has baseballs all over it. I wear the pump all of the time. Since I have been using the pump my blood sugar levels have come down and that makes my mommy and my doctor happy.

I have an older brother named Brandon who is six. He does not have diabetes like me, but he does help me to eat the right snacks and to make sure that I tell my mommy if I don't feel good. He is a real big help to me and I love him a lot. My favorite sport is baseball. This summer I played tee-ball on the Yankees and I really enjoyed it. Having diabetes has not prevented me from doing anything and I don't ever want it to. My family and I hope that soon we will have a cure for type 1 diabetes.

I want to tell the other kids that have diabetes and are really scared: don't be scared I am like you. Things seem really bad in the beginning but they will get better for you.
