Back to Kid' Voices Autumn

Hi, my name is Autumn. I'm 10 years old and in the fifth grade. I was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago. I was drinking a lot of water, going to the restroom a lot, losing weight, and very tired. My mom took me to the doctor because she thought I had a urinary tract infection. The doctor said I had sugar in my urine and immediately sent us to the hospital.

My mom took me straight to the hospital where they admitted me immediately. My sugar was 600. I was then diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes. I was very lucky because the doctor said if I had waited any longer, I would have gone into a diabetic coma. This really scared my mom and me.

I stayed in the hospital for a week. My mom stayed with me and my family visited and brought me all kinds of surprises. I learned to check my own sugar, change my eating habits, and give myself injections. At first, I was really scared, but after a few weeks, I learned it is really not that bad. Now, I give myself two injections a day, check my sugar regularly, watch what I eat and exercise every day. I love cheerleading and I go twice a week to practice, and when I don't do that, I ride my bike, run, and play with my dog, Tobi. I really hope that by the summer I can get an insulin pump. That will be a lot easier than giving injections.

For the other children living with diabetes, just take care of yourselves. My mom encourages me every day to stay healthy and do what is right. My mama tells me God has a plan for everyone and a reason for everything. She tells me I am very special and she is very special to me, too!
