Back to Kid' Voices Anna

Hello, my name is Anna, I am 16 years old and live in New York City. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in January 2004 at the age of 14 and went on the Animas pump two weeks after. I feel like I have all the freedom I need with it.

A month before I was diagnosed I was extremely sick and in bed day after day. I lost a ton of weight and was really skinny. I was drinking tons of juice every day because I hated the taste of water at that time since my body was craving sugar. My doctor told me that it was a virus that will just pass; he didn't realize it was diabetes even though I have a brother who was diagnosed with it two years before hand. Finally in January after my doctor kept on telling me it would pass. Soon he realized it was something more serious when he saw me and sent me straight to the hospital. At that point I was so sick I could barely even walk to the car. My family was scared to look at me because I looked like a walking skeleton. When I was diagnosed my blood sugar was 900. Thank G-D they caught it in time. I have 2 older brothers with type 1 diabetes -- one who is 20 years old and one who is 22 years. My 22 year old brother was diagnosed three months after me. All three of us are on the Animas pump and we love it.

Even though I was diagnosed a year and a half ago I still go through a lot of hard and depressing times. Yet I can't say only bad came from it. I've met some excellent friends, and I have discovered how supportive a family can be. With my diabetes I have also learned to be so much more organized something I have never known how to be before. So I guess you can find good in anything.

I can't say I have totally learned to live with diabetes because that would be a lie but every day I try to do the best I can and I guess that is good enough.

I would love to meet new people and make new friends. I can be reached at hoti130 AT I can't wait to hear from you.
