Back to Kids' Voices Kristi

Hi, my name is Kristi and I am 14 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes on April 23, 2005. It was a major shock. My godmother noticed that I was drinking a lot of water and mentioned that I should go get tested. She knew this because she has had it for 35 years. So a few days later i was tested and sure enough I had type 1 diabetes. At first I was really mad and upset. But I went to Winnipeg to a diabetes clinic and they lifted up my spirits right away. They taught me all about my diabetes and how to manage it. All the staff were really understanding and helpful for the three days that I had spent there.

For the first few weeks my sugar levels were through the roof and the people at school, considering no one else had diabetes, were not very helpful. It was scary having no one understand anything that was going on.

Now, almost six months later my levels are quite controlled and I have learn to except that I have to live with this disease which isn't bad at all compare to a lot of stuff.

I have had a lot of new experiences like going to Camp Briardale, which was an awesome time and giving myself injections. I am planning for an insulin pump so everything is gong really good.

If you want to talk or something you can email me and/or add me on messenger at kristi5932 AT
