Back to Kids' Voices Shanee

Hello, my name is Shanee and I would like to tell you my story. I am 14 years old and I have type 1 diabetes. I have had diabetes for almost 10 years. When I was first diagnosed, I was just 5 years old. I had all the symptoms of diabetes. The way I found out I was diabetic was one day when I had a doctor's appointment. I was at the doctor's office all day. That was not normal. I had many tests run on me and had to take many shots. That was not normal either. My doctor also told my mom that, if she would not have taken me to the hospital that day, I would have been in a coma since my blood sugar was over 1000 mg/dl. I was diagnosed on December 18, 1995 at Children's Hospital. I did not get out of the hospital until December 24, the day before Christmas.

I felt like I was different because, every hour, I was either taking a shot or eating a snack. Other kids were out playing while I was doing that. Now that I am older, I realize that all that was worth it because it made me healthier. This year, 2004, it will be 10 years that I have had diabetes. I believe that diabetes is a big part of me and, if they came up with a cure, I would feel like a big part is missing. However, it would be good for others if they came up with a cure. My family and friends are very interested in my diabetes, how it works, everything.

I am interested in getting a pen pal to talk about diabetes and just relate to each other. I would like to let you know I am a great basketball player and a great volleyball player. I am in the ninth grade in high school. I really love talking on the telephone and shopping. I love shopping! I am also really boy crazy. I am a great listener and love hearing about other people's problems. I love music. I have many favorite artists now. I also have a job, working with cookies! (Nice place for a diabetic.)

I am interested in pen pals, 14 to 16 years old, male or female. I just want to talk. My e-mail addresses is neyney_oneal AT I love getting e-mail and would love to hear from you soon.
