Back to Kids' Voices Rachel

Hi my name is Rachel. I'm 13 years old, I live is Illinois, and I'm in 7th Grade. I've had diabetes for five years (since I was eight). I just got on the Deltec Cozmo Insulin pump. It's really great! Before the pump I had to take up to seven shots a day! My mom (since she was eight) and little sister (since she was three, and she is now seven) have diabetes too. I have a lot of diabetes in my family. I've been to camp Granada twice and I'm going again this year.

The day I found out I had diabetes I was at my cousin's house and I was really thirsty. I kept on drinking apple juice. When my mom came and picked me up my aunt told her I was drinking a lot. My mom checked my blood sugar on her machine and it was really high (I don't remember what it was)! My dad called the hospital and they told me to come in first thing in the morning. We went and (of course) they said I had diabetes. But I didn't have to stay at the hospital, because my mom had diabetes. That same day we went to the Children's hospital of Illinois. There they gave me insulin and I felt 100% better. Then all in the same day they taught me how to take my blood sugar, and show me how shots were givin. My mom and dad already knew how to do this because my mom is diabetic. They gave me with some insulin and blood sticks and we went home.

I guess I'm pretty lucky that my mom and sister have diabetes. I always have someone to talk to about it. Diabetes dosn't slow me down at all. My favorite sports are Basketball, Skateboarding, and Snowboarding. I love monkeys, and have a bunch of toy monkeys around my room.

I would love yo be your penpal you can e-mail me at mscott[@] or themonkey0405[@] or if you have aol instant messanger my screen name is themonkey0405.
