Back to Kids' Voices Maria Silvia

Hi, my name is Maria Silvia. I am 7 years old and I am diabetic since February 2000.

After the first phase of the diabetes, when everybody at home had to get used to new procedures (checking glucose, insulin injections, starting a new diet), my life got back to normal little by little. Nowadays I check my glucose about 4 or 5 times a day and I take 3 doses of insulin. I eat very healthy, well-balanced food, and I also eat candies and sweets sometimes.

I love to go to school, where I have lots of friends and to go to the club, where I practice swimming and karate, which help me a lot in controlling the diabetes. I am also very fond of going to the beach. We own a house in a very nice island called Ilhabella, where the four of us (my mom, my dad, my brother - Joćo Felipe - and myself) travel almost every weekend. We have a couple of good friends there who always join us for a lot of fun.

As you can see, although I have the diabetes to take care of, my life is pretty normal, like any other child at my age. I play a lot, I practice sports, I study in a nice school and I travel a lot.

I already got used to the daily "shots" and medication I take and I know that they help me to control the glucose and have a healthy life. I am sure doctors will soon find the cure to us who have diabetes so we can live a normal life in the near future.

You can e-mail my mom at carlafhueb[@]
