Back to Kids' Voices Lindsey

Hi, my name is Lindsey. I am 7 years old. I just found out that I was diabetic on December 6, 2002. I thought I had the flu. I was drinking all the time and going to the bathroom and I was so tired. One night my stomach hurt so bad that my mommy took me to the emergency room. I was very, very sick. They told me I had diabetes and that I would have to stay in the hospital. I got to ride in an ambulance down to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, but I slept most of the way and really don't remember it. I have a lot of great doctors who are helping me to learn about diabetes. At first, it was really hard having diabetes, cause I couldn't eat what I wanted. But now, I fell much better because I know what is going on in my body and I know ho to keep myself healthy. I don't like taking shots sometimes because it hurts, but I know I have to take them. My Aunt Joy is a nurse and she gives really good shots. My mommy gives okay shots too!

I was really angry when I realized what my life was going to be like with diabetes. Now, I realize that I will be okay, and the doctors say that there will probably be a cure for diabetes in my lifetime. I have enrolled in a study at the IU Medical Center to help in finding a cure!

I am excited about going to diabetes camp because I can't wait to meet other kids with diabetes. I would love to hear from some of you. Please email me at snhjones[@]
