Hi, Hello. My name is Alec Michaels. I live in California. I have had diabetes for almost a year. I just turned 13 and I was diagnosed on October 18, 2001. I will never forget the night when I was diagnosed. It was about 10:30 PM on October 17th and I was really sick, and I was really thirsty and vomiting. My mom took me to the Emergency room that night because she had never seen me this sick before. Then the doctor asked me some questions about my symptoms, and he told me I might be showing signs of diabetes. The nurse then took a sample of my blood and then later told me that my blood sugar was 599. I was then admited into the hospital and stayed there for 4 days. The doctors taught me all about diabetes and how I would have to change my lifestyle.
It was hard at first to deal with the shots and finger pokes, and it took me a while to level my blood sugar, but now I think that it is just a daily routine and I don't mind taking insulin shots (I have to do it 3 times a day) or checking my blood sugar.
My mom heard about the insulin pump and she told me about it and I thought it sounded cool, so I hope to get one soon.
Well that's my story. Thanks for listening.
