Hi everybody! My name is Irina Herescu (you can call me Iri) and I'm 13 years old. I live with my family in Bucharest, Romania. I found out that I had insulin dependent diabetes one year and a few months ago, on December 21, 2000, some days before Christmas. That year, I had to stay in the hospital on Christmas and I missed the Christmas party.

Before I knew that I have diabetes, I was drinking a lot of water and I was going to the bathroom very often. I was always hungry. My mother's mate told us that I probably had diabetes. And she was right: I had a blood glucose 407!

At first, I thought that I'll take a few insulin injections and I'd be cured of diabetes. When I found out that I'll have to take insulin injections all my life, I started crying, but in the course of the time I became accustomed to it.

Last summer, I went in a camp at Timisoara with other diabetic children. There, we had a swimming-pool and a fitness room. I realized that you can live very well with this disease, because you mustn't let diabetes control your life.

My hobbies are drawing, painting, reading, listening to music. I also like basketball, volleyball, swimming and the gym.

I like very much plants and animals, but I haven't had a pet yet.

I want very much to communicate with children (girls and boys) around the world about diabetes and a lot of other things. So, if you want another pen pal, e-mail me at iry201 [@]
