Back to Kids' Voices Katie

Hello. My name is Katie Reed and I am 6 years old. I live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, which is a suburb of Albuquerque. We moved here in June 2000 from Pennsylvania. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year on Thanksgiving Day. We had to have our Thanksgiving 6 days late, but that is okay, because it was a good dinner!

I have 2 brothers, Alexander 4.5 years old and Korbin who is 2. I also have a sister, Ashley who will be 10 very soon. I also have 3 pet turtles. I don't like to have diabetes and I definitely do not like finger pricks and shots, but I don't give my mommy and daddy any problems about it because I know that my insulin is keeping me healthy and I want to stay healthy because I do not like to be sick.

I was diagnosed after I got really sick last year and I remember how that felt. My mommy took me to the doctor because I was drinking and peeing a lot. The doctor said it was just New Mexico's climate--it dehydrates a lot of kids. My mommy knew something else was wrong so she took me to the hospital a couple of days later when I was feeling very tired. My blood sugar was over 600 when I got to the hospital. I stayed in the hospital for 5 days and my endo gave me a Rufus bear (girl) that I love very much and I named her Starz because of her pretty dress.

I will be going into first grade in the fall and I am really excited. I am starting gymnastics and cheerleading this summer too so I have a lot to look forward to!

Right now I am on very little insulin because I am still honeymooning, but my mommy still has to give me 3-4 shots a day. I want a pump someday! And I am trying to talk my mommy into letting me go to diabetes camp next year.

If anyone wants to e-mail me I would love it. You can e-mail me at
