Back to Kids' Voices Joshua
Hi! My name is Joshua and I am 3 1/2 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 9 months old. Since I am only 3 1/2 years old, my dad is helping me write this. Mom and dad tell me that my story actually begins even before I was born. When my mom was 9 months pregnant with me her doctors discovered that she had breast cancer. The day after my mom found out that she had breast cancer, I was born. Because of mom's condition the doctors had to wait alittle while before they could perform surgery. After surgery, mom had to have chemotherapy and radiation to help fight the cancer.

Exactly one month after mom finished her last radiation treatment I got sick. Mom took me in to the doctor's office and he said that I just had the flu. When a few days passed and I still wasn't getting any better, my mom took me back to the doctor's office. Again the doctor said that I just had the flu and not to worry. Two days later when I was at home, my body went totally limp and my mom rushed me to the emergency room. The doctors discovered that my blood sugar was over 1600! The doctors said that it was the highest blood sugar that they had ever seen! Because that hospital did not have the facilities to handle a case like mine, I was rushed to Children's Hospital of Orange County by ambulance. I spent five days in intensive care where the doctors slowly brought my blood sugar down to normal. During that same time, the doctors and nurses taught my mom and dad how to care for me when I was able to leave the hospital and go back home. My older brother Christopher is 11 years old and helps me test my blood and watches what I eat. He also wrestles with me and lets me play on his computer. Mom, Dad and Christopher usually check my blood sugars 5-7 times a day and I usually get 4 shots a day. I also have to take a pill in the morning because my thyroid isn't working very well.

My biggest thrill came last summer when I got to meet former President Ronald Reagan! He was really nice and I got to shake his hand! It has been almost three years since I was diagnosed and my mom and me are both doing great! So is my brother Christopher. There is only one thing I don't understand about diabetes, if I'm the one who is suppose to be sick, why has my dad's hair gone from dark brown to solid gray in only three years?
