Back to Kids' Voices Ethan
Hello, my name is Ethan and I am 6 years old. I was diagnosed January 8, 1996 when I was 4 years old. I got sick like my older brother Zachary and my daddy. They had the flu and that is what everyone thought I had when I began showing symptoms. I kept drinking all the time and going to the bathroom. Then on the 8th day of January I got so sick I could not hold my head up. My mother took me to the emergency room at our local hospital. There my blood sugar was over 800 and then I got to ride in a ambulance to another hospital to see special doctors.

Now I am in the first grade and everyone in my class helps me with my diabetes. At the first of the year my tear read a book to the whole class explaining what could happen to me. Now when I am feeling low or high the whole class can help me check my blood sugar. We also are learning our numbers very well by having to read the meter. Most everyone in my class knows when I am not where I need to be with my blood sugar. And they all even get my extra snack and things when I need them.

Most of the time it is not easy having diabetes then some times I get to feel extra special for being a little different from everyone else in my school. My whole family has learned that we have to take things minute by minute and enjoy them as they come.

August 1999 Update
I am now in the second grade and having a blast. I am having trouble getting my blood sugars regulated a little. My teacher is Mrs. Wynn and I think I am driving her NUTS! She has been really great in learning all that she needs to know.

I am still lucky enough to check my blood sugars in the class room and Mrs. Wynn is even learning how to help my with my insulin pens at school so my mom does not have to come to school all that much.

I have a good friend in my class with me named Jennie and she helps me when I need some help. My class is really neat this year and a lot of fun like last year. So maybe we can last with out driving my second grade teacher nuts.
