Eight-year-old Lindsay Cowan, of Lake Oswego, Oregon, was diagnosed with diabetes four years ago. She loves nothing better than to hang out with her friends. This fall Lindsay hoped to persuade a few of her pals to help her raise diabetes research funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation's "Walk To The Cure" in Portland, Oregon. Lindsay and her family were thrilled when a total of 135 people from their community walked on Lindsay's "Looney Boots" team and raised more than $10,000 for diabetes research!
Lindsay's friends from school, soccer and church turned out for the September 13, 1998 walk along with their parents -- and even a couple of family dogs. They were among some 2,000 people, including a dozen or so other family walk teams, who walked to raise an estimated $175,000 in research funds for JDF at the Portland walk site. Lindsay's "Looney Boots" teammates included three other Lake Oswego children who have diabetes.
Lindsay's mom, Katherine, an attorney, is a member of the local JDF board and helped Lindsay to organize their family walk team. The Cowans solicited sponsorships from local companies to cover the cost of the team T-shirts, a team kickoff party, photos, and a team pizza awards party. A 10-year-old friend from San Francisco helped create the T-shirt design. Hundreds of friends from the Lake Oswego area, who could not participate in the walk, gave monetary pledges to Lindsay's team. Lindsay's family also sent out flyers to more than a hundred out-of-town friends; many responded by sending generous checks. Two local newspapers ran coverage of the "Looney Boots" team's efforts.
The Cowans feel deeply gratified by the outpouring of support from their local community. Their friends' generosity strengthens the Cowans' confidence that, thanks to an ever-increasing commitment of dollars to diabetes research through JDF and the federal government, a cure for diabetes will be found in the near future.
