Back to Kids' Voices Ashley Justine
Hello! My name is Ashley Justine. I am 12 years old. I have had diabetes since I was 9 months old. I am in Grade 6 at Goff Junior High School.

I think that I am luckier than most people who get diabetes. I was so young when I was diagnosed that I had not had a chance to taste sugar. It's hard though, when I have an insulin reaction because I don't like the taste of anything sweet.

When I think of all of the awful and sad diseases that children get, it makes me so thankful that I only have diabetes. My Mom knows lots and lots of neat little tricks to make my diabetes cooperate.

My diabetes doesn't keep me from doing all of the things I like to do. I have been going to dance school since I was 2-1/2 years old. I take acrobats, tap, jazz and pointe ballet. I love to dance and pointe is my favorite. I like to ride my bike and read lots of books.

I am a member of my school's Cross-Country Track Team and we were the city champions last year. In October, 1997, I walked 15 kilometers for the American Diabetes Association's Walk-a-thon.

When I have vacation from school, I always try to visit my Nana and GaGa. Sometimes, my favorite Great Aunt and Uncle come to see me at my GaGa's house and we always have a wonderful time.

I have a sister Chelsea who is 9 years old. We get along great together and she is one of my best friends. I have three dogs, a basset hound (Pepper), a dachshund (Rocky) and a toy poodle (Fluffy), and one siamese cat named Sam. I love my animals. Even when my diabetes makes me feel bad, my animals always snuggle up to me and then I feel a lot better. They don't seem to mind that I have diabetes. I guess they love me anyway. My Mom says they love me because I'm a peaceful kind of person.

My Papa is in the U.S. Navy. It's sad when he goes away, but he always brings me nice presents from wherever he goes. Most often, he goes to Sicily and Japan.

When I grow up, I'm going to be a diabetes doctor for children. I can understand their problems because I've been there and I know what it is like to have diabetes.

I hope to get lots of e-mail from other children with diabetes. My adddress is ashleydacanay[@] and I will e-mail back to you as soon as possible.
