Back to Kids' Voices Michelle
Michelle just had her 7th birthday in June and will be starting second grade in September '96. She likes school and her teachers and classmates have all been very good in helping her deal with her diabetes. Her brother, David, is 11 and he too is a big help to her. Michelle enjoys dancing (jazz and ballet), music, reading, swimming and playing with her brother. She also played t-ball with the girl's softball league this summer.

Michelle was diagnosed when she was 2 years old. We had no family history of diabetes prior to this, so we were totally unprepared for what lay ahead. It took us about a year to finally get "back to normal", or at least to the point where Michelle's diabetes is a part of our daily routine. We visit a diabetes team consisting of a pediatric endocrinologist, diabetes nurse/educator, and nutritionist about 3 times a year. We also went to the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Mass. last year and were so pleased with them that we plan to go there every year now.

Diabetes has changed our lives, but we haven't let it stop us from doing the things we like to do. It's an inconvenience to have to worry about snacks, shots, highs/lows, etc., but it is managable. We tell Michelle that we hate diabetes too, but as long as we control the diabetes, it WON'T control us!
