From Riverside, California, USA:

My 59 year old mom was diagnosed with diabetes three weeks ago. She also has a urine infection and is taking antibiotics. She is worried because her sugar levels are still high (her last blood sugar was 313 mg/dl [17.4 mmol/L]). How long will take to lower her sugar levels?

Your mom is right to be worried about her blood sugar. A blood sugar level as high as 313 mg/dl [17.4 mmol/L may worsen her infection, and her levels will stay high unless she gets a proper diet and/or medication. She needs to contact her doctor for further help or ask for a referral to an endocrinologist.
