From Georgia, USA:

I have diabetes and am looking for information on how to become a Certified Diabetes Educator.

Certified Diabetes Educators are health professionals who have significant experience in teaching patients how to self-manage their condition, and have passed a national certifying examination. The process of becoming a CDE involves several steps.

  1. The first is to become a health professional. Nurses, dietitians, physicians, and pharmacists are all able to become Certified Diabetes Educators. There are a few other disciplines that can also apply.

  2. Obtain experience working with persons with diabetes. I believe a minimum of 1000 hours of patient teaching experience are required.

  3. Develop the specialized knowledge and skills needed by educators through some combination of academic and continuing education as well as self-directed reading and experience.

  4. Pass the national certifying exam. The exam covers many content areas in clinical medicine, educational process, psychological adjustment and coping. It is not discipline-specific. This means that nurses are asked the same questions about nutrition as dietitians and dietitians are asked the same questions about medicines as nurses.

For the latest criteria, check with the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. They currently have a website under construction but in the meantime, you can call their Chicago office at (847) 229-9795. They can provide all the details you require to make your educational and career plans.
