From Florida, USA:

We have notice a lot of new foods with alcohol sugars. Exactly how do these sugars affect diabetes?

Sugar alcohols contain 4 calories per gram just as regular sugars. They are absorbed more slowly so do not cause the blood sugar to rise a quickly. In terms of calories, they are equal gram for gram. Another side effect of sugar alcohols can be gastrointestinal disturbances.

Additional Comments from Lois Finney, diabetes dietitian:

I would go a little stronger and say that if someone eats several servings of foods with sugar alcohols, diarrhea may result. It seems like people get so excited that there is "no sugar" in the food they often go overboard, but only once does it -- then they learn.
