From California, USA:

My 11 year old son has Type 1 diabetes. What does he need to know when he gets a flu or cold?

In general, when people with type 1 diabetes are sick, they should treat the illness, as well as see if they need more fluids and/or insulin. Check blood sugar and ketones every four hours while sick and call the diabetes care team for advice. If sick, or under stress, the body's response to this illness or stress may cause a need for more insulin. If they do not recognize this need for more insulin, then diabetic ketoacidosis is possible. Make sure they drink enough to prevent dehydration, and never skip insulin. If blood sugars are low while sick, then call the diabetes team for advice.
