From North Carolina, USA:
Has any research been done on the possible link between adverse reactions to the DPT vaccination and diabetes? Since the true cause of diabetes is not yet known, shouldn't this be pursued just to rule it out?
So far as I know no one has so far established a link between DPT reactions and Type 1 Diabetes. You have to remember that the immunopathology that leads to clinical Type 1 diabetes is likely to have begun many months or years before the stress of a reaction so that a connection is hard to prove.
There is a national study called DAISY (Diabetes and AutoImmune Study in Youth) in which high risk infants are selected from the general population by the HLA typing of cord blood. These subjects are followed for seven years for the development of antibodies and this in turn is being correlated with a variety of events including DPT reactions, exposure to cow's milk, age at immunisation etc, etc. So we'll know one day!
