Contact Your Representative and/or Senator Regarding NIH FundingJune 25, 1997 If your U.S. Representative or one of your U.S. Senators is a member of the House Appropriations or Senate Appropriations Committee, you need to respond to this JDF Legislative Alert immediately. If your Representative/Senator is not a member of one of these Committees, you do not need to respond today. However, keep checking back to this site for future Alerts.
STATUS OF NIH FUNDING:
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education is scheduled to mark-up their version of the Fiscal Year 1998 Labor, HHS and Education appropriations bill, which provides funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), on July 8th. The corresponding Senate Subcommittee is scheduled to mark-up their version of the bill sometime in mid to late July. Following each respective Subcommittees' mark-up, the bill is expected to be immediately marked-up by the full House and Senate Appropriations Committees.
This means it is critical for you to contact your Representative and/or Senator, who sits on the House or Senate Appropriations Committee, by July 7th, urging them to appropriate, at a minimum:
- 9 percent increase for the NIH or $13.89 billion in total funding.
- 12 percent increase for NIDDK, or $913.9 million in total funding.
Some points to include in your letter:
- Your personal story.
- To seriously contain federal spending on health care, including Medicare and Medicaid, the federal investment in medical research must be maintained. There is ample evidence that an investment in medical research yields substantial savings in treatment costs. Research which leads to a cure for and prevention of diseases such as diabetes can potentially save the federal government and society billions in health care costs - $138 billion per year for diabetes alone.
- This level of funding is needed to sustain growth for investigator-initiated research; maintain support for both existing and new research centers and clinical trials; and to provide necessary funding for trans-NIH special initiatives.
- A 9 percent increase for NIH represents Dr. Harold Varmus', Director of the NIH, FY '98 "professional judgement budget" proposal.
