The National Diabetes Research Coalition Legislative Alert

Dear Friend of People with Diabetes:

Critical decisions are being made in Washington D.C. that will dramatically affect the amount of federal funding which will go to diabetes research this year.

It is imperative that you fax, write letters and make phone calls (as many as possible) NOW, to the chairman of the House and Senate Appropriations Sub-Committees, which fund the Diabetes Research Programs at the National Institutes of Health, so that your voice is heard in Washington on these vital decisions which are being made that affect you, your family, and loved ones. Urge your family and friends to do the same! Send as many letters as possible.

The message is that 77 milion dollars must be added to the diabetes research appropriations (a 25 percent increase) in order to advance the research, to produce new therapies, and to save lives!

In your letter, identify yourself (scientist, parent of a diabetic, diabetic). Briefly tell your own story, or describe your own research. Mention that there are 16 million Americans suffering from diabetes, that 400,000 diabetics die each year and there are 650,000 new diabetics each year. Mention in your letter that of the 5 major diseases, including: diabetes, cancer, aids, and breast cancer, diabetes funding is at the bottom of the list. At a time when the greatest potential for research breakthroughs exist to prevent, treat and cure diabetes, funding levels need to be raised substantially if we are to save lives. In your letters urge strongly that 72 million ADDITIONAL dolars need to be appropriated by the Federal Government for Diabetes Research in 1997 to advance the research and to save lives. Ask your Congressman or Senator to please listen to the nation's scientists and to those who suffer from this dreadful disease and its devastating complications.
