Caution About Pumps and Magnetic Fields

In a letter dated February 5, 2003, Animas Corporation reminded health care professionals and pump wearers about the importance of keeping insulin pumps away from the very powerful magnetic fields associated with MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, and RF welding equipment. The high magentic fields can cause an over delivery of insulin by re-magnetizing the portion of the motor that regulates insulin delivery. Pump users are encouraged to check their own User's Manual, as they all mention the importance of keeping insulin pumps away from the very strong magnetic fields associated with MRIs, CT scans. Roller coaster riders should also check to see if the ride uses magnets to accelerate the coaster.

All insulin pumps can be used safely around security system scanners such as those found at entrances to buildings and at airports.
