Lilly unveiled a historic monument on Thursday, August 12, 2004, that honors people who have managed their diabetes with insulin for 75 years or more. Atlanta resident, 83-year-old Bill Bell, was the first person to receive the Lilly for Life 75-year Insulin Award. Bell was also one of the first insulin users after being diagnosed with diabetes as a child in 1928. Lilly introduced insulin to the market in 1923.
Bells says that insulin has allowed him to live a great life with few limitations. Today he is the proud great-grandfather of twin girls. The photos show Bill and his wife Betty receiving the award.
