Angry at Diabetes
Facilitator: Scott Scolnick
Location: Fiesta 9 and 10

As parents of kids with diabetes, we often experience anger at this unwanted intruder into our children's lives. Anger can be a healthy emotion - and it can fuel us in very positive ways. Or, conversely, it can impact our families in negative ways and be destructive. Join family therapist Scott Scolnick for a closer look at how anger works in all of our families.

This opportunity is offered by several of the pump companies in the exhibit hall. Please refer to them for guidelines

Understanding the Ups and Downs of Blood Sugar
Presenter: Irl Hirsch

Ever download your blood glucose meter, look at the pages of data and the pretty charts and say, "Huh?" This session will talk about glycemic variability - what it is, and what the effects may be. Dr. Hirsch will also help parents understand how to read and interpret a glucose download.

Diabetes Overwhelmus
Presenter: Richard Rubin
Location: Fiesta 5

The emotional side of diabetes is often overlooked, but it's so important because many people, particularly those families newly-diagnosed, suffer from "diabetes overwhelmus." They are simply overwhelmed by the day-to-day demands of diabetes. Feeling overwhelmed makes it almost impossible to take good care of your diabetes. This session presents ways to prevent or overcome diabetes overwhelmus and is applicable whether you are a person with diabetes, a family member experiencing "secondary" diabetes overwhelmus, or a health care professional trying to make sense of it all.

Talking to Your Teens
Presenter: Natalie Bellini
Location: Fiesta 6

As parents of teens know, having a conversation with a teen can be quite different from conversations with older and younger kids. Teens are learning independence - wanting to make their own decisions, yet needing information and guidance as well. Natalie Bellini is CWD's Teen Program Coordinator and she was a teen with diabetes once upon a time. Join her for her humorous and very honest look at how to talk to your teens.

In My Shoes
Facilitator: Scott Scolnick

Sometimes, it is just so hard to see a situation from someone else's perspective. Psychologist Scott Scolnick is an expert as helping people do just that. Join him for some fun role-playing ... and see what those size 9's really feel like!

Grandparents Discussion: How Does Diabetes Affect Your Family?
Facilitator: Betty Brackenridge
Location: Fiesta 9 and 10

Back by popular demand - it's the grandparents! For the last three years, our growing group of involved grandparents has requested time and space during the conference to begin discussing some of their own challenges. Please join them for some wonderful conversation and new insight into the grandkids!

3:15 - 4:15 p.m.

Healthy Living for People with Type 1
Presenter: Francine Kaufman

Exercise and Busy Kids
Presenter: Rick Philbin

Exercise poses very specific challenges to kids with type 1 diabetes, and yet a good exercise program is one of the best ways to manage diabetes and keep those blood glucose levels in range! Whether you are a competitive athlete, a weekend warrior, or a student taking gym class, Rick will have some great ideas for you.

It's Not Just A Numbers Game
Presenter: Joe Solowiejcyzk
Location: Fiesta 5

Diabetes is so much more than just measuring blood glucose values and counting carbs. It involves family dynamics, school, caregivers, growth, feelings, and most of all - an entire family. Join family counselor Joe S for a new look at type 1 diabetes. It is more than just a numbers game.

Picking the Right Infusion Set
Facilitator: Natalie Bellini
Location: Fiesta 6

There are so many infusion sets on the market right now - picking 'the right one' can be mind-boggling in and of itself. What are the differences between angled vs straight-in insertions? Why is a 6 mm cannula different than a 9 mm in terms of function, and who should use each? Which infusion sets go in by hand and which have an insertion device? Which sets are proprietary to specific pumps, and which can be used with any pump? How do you get an infusion set to stick - and then how do you get it off when it's really really stuck? Natalie has a sense of humor about all of this… and not only will she give you tons of information, she will have you laughing in your seat as you make sense of it all!

Town Hall Meeting with the Surgeon General
Facilitator: Jeff Hitchcock
Location: Fiesta 7 and 8

No matter what your age, if you are a person with diabetes (or the parent of one), you are bound to have questions about your future health and the future of health care in the United States. Join a selected panel of teens, college students, young adults, and parents as they ask questions of Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu. If time permits, questions will also be taken from the audience.

School Success Stories
Facilitator: Crystal Jackson
Location: Fiesta 9 and 10

While we often hear about kids who experience significant challenges managing their diabetes in school, there are many, many success stories that illustrate how school administrators and staff can work hand in hand with parents, students, and families to provide an optimal learning environment for kids with type 1. Join Crystal to examine some of these stories - and please bring your own if you have a good one to tell! We can all learn from each others' successes.
