Special Guest - Kelly Close
Kelly L. Close is founder and principal of Close Concerns, Inc., a San Francisco-based consulting firm focused on diabetes and obesity research. Close Concerns provides strategic advisory services to pharmaceutical, medical device, and biotechnology companies as well as investment banks, venture capitalists, and private equity firms. Major corporate clients include Abbott, Amylin, J&J, Medtronic, and Roche and a range of investment firms interested in diabetes. In addition to leading consulting projects, Kelly is editor-in-chief of Diabetes Close Up, a monthly newsletter focused on the businesses of diabetes and obesity, and Diabetes Round Up, an annual overview on industry trends.
Kelly's 15-year career combines her expertise in diabetes, consulting, and healthcare. She possesses significant experience in financial analysis and marketing and has a strong track record in these sectors, having served as medical technology equity research analyst at Piper Jaffray and Merrill Lynch. Prior to her equity research roles, she worked in McKinsey & Co.'s healthcare practice. She began her career in the investment banking division at Goldman Sachs.
Kelly's passion for the field comes from her extensive professional work as well as her personal experience as a patient with type 1 diabetes for nearly 20 years. She has built her firm on the importance of patient perspective; most of the 15 contributors at her firm have diabetes themselves or has a child, sibling, spouse, or parent with diabetes. Stemming from her work in the diabetes arena, Kelly is a recognized authority on the business of diabetes, and is a frequent writer and speaker on this subject. She has been published in The New York Times, The New England Journal of Medicine, BioSensors and Bioelectronics, and the American Journal of Nursing and writes a regular column on research news on dLife.com. A diabetes advocate for many years, she is on advisory boards for the Juvenile Research Diabetes Foundation, dLife, and is very proud to work with the Children with Diabetes foundation on its annual scholarship program.
Kelly earned a BA in economics and English from Amherst College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She lives in San Francisco with her husband John and daughter Coco.
