This was a year that perhaps should have been called the ‘Year of Country’ at Friends for Life. Music, that is. Several of our sponsors, knowing that this had been somewhat of a challenging year for CWD, wanted to do something special and supportive… something a little bit extra above and beyond the usual wonderful things they do for all of us at Friends for Life. And so they did. They brought music. George Canyon. Eric Paslay. RaeLynn Woodward. Crystal Bowersox. Amanda Jo. These musicians played for us, made us smile, encouraged us to dance, told us about their own challenges living with type 1, and spent time with our kids. It was, indeed, quite special – and so very much appreciated.
Two thousand participants – including 700 first timers - joined over 80 faculty members, 89 youth program staff, two dozen support staff, 11 VIP special guests, three screening teams, and scores of volunteers for the 17th annual Friends for Life Orlando conference, held the week of July 4 at the Marriott World Center.
The Exhibit Hall was packed. Sports Central was packed. TrialNet and Celiac screenings were nonstop. Retinal Screenings flowed one right after another every day, all day, all week. Orange and green bracelets were everywhere, as were smiles, tears, and hugs. And selfies on social media.
Our most sincere thanks to the sponsors who supported this conference and who each year allow us to make it bigger and better: Novo Nordisk, Lilly Diabetes, Dexcom, Inc., The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, Tandem Diabetes Care, Insulet Corporation, Animas Corporation, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Abbott Diabetes Care, Sanofi Diabetes, Ascensia Diabetes Care, BD, the American Diabetes Association, Beyond Type 1, the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation, and JDRF. On behalf of the thousands of people you touched at Friends for Life 2016, we are so grateful for your friendship and support.
Many thanks to the sponsors of our first Fellows Program, which helped three MD Fellows, one PhD Fellow, and one new CDE learn about real life with type 1 diabetes: Dexcom, Inc., Insulet Corporation, and Roche Diabetes Care.
